DeKalb County Business Resources
DeKalb County was established in 1822 as Georgia’s 56th county and sits on 269 square miles of land just east of Fulton County. DeKalb County has an estimated 740,000 residents and is the state’s most populated county behind Fulton and Gwinnett counties. Today 10% of Atlanta is located within DeKalb County, although before Fulton County was established from the western half of DeKalb in 1853, the city was located entirely within DeKalb. The County is named after Baron Johann de Kalb. Born in Germany, de Kalb served a distinguished career in the French army and was sent to the US in 1768 to perform a secret mission to determine the colonists true discontent. He gained respect for the colonists during this mission, and in 1777 returned to the United States with LaFayette to fight during the American Revolution in the Continental Army. War did finally touch DeKalb County during the Battle of Atlanta. This Civil War battle was fought mostly in DeKalb County, near the courthouse and DeKalb Avenue. Early settlers to the area migrated from Virginia and the Carolinas and were mainly of Irish, Scottish and English ancestry. Mostly uneducated, these settlers relied on subsistence farming. Mainstays of the area’s economy were vegetable and dairy farming, cotton production and granite quarrying. Interestingly, very early evidence of soapstone quarrying has been found on Soapstone Ridge, in the southern part of the county. Heavily excavated between 1400 and 100 BC, evidence has been discovered indicating that objects made from this soapstone were traded to areas as far north as the Great Lakes region of the United States. Over time, as in many parts of Georgia, the mostly agricultural economy gave way to urbanization as highways were built connecting metropolitan Atlanta to outlying areas, such as:
- Decatur
- Dunwoody
- North Atlanta
- Chamblee
- Clarkston
- Doraville
- North Druid Hills
- Pine Lake
- Stone Mountain
