Decatur is the county seat of DeKalb County and is located between Stone Mountain and downtown Atlanta. Named for the naval hero Stephen Decatur, it was founded in 1823 as the first settlement in the area. Originally, the city center revolved around a trading post at the intersection of the Sandtown and Shallowford Indian trails. Today the city is located on 4.2 square miles and is home to an estimated 18,000 residents. The fate of Decatur was forever altered in the late 1830’s when the citizens turned down the opportunity to have a railroad terminal built in the town. They were opposed to the pollution, noise and growth that was sure to come with the project. Western and Atlantic Railroad made the proposal to add the stop in Decatur as the southernmost station on the route to Chattanooga, Tennessee. When Decatur declined, the railroad founded a new city to house the railroad terminal. The city was originally named “Atlantica-Pacifica” after the railroad’s official name, but the name was later shortened to Atlanta. Since then, Decatur has survived in the shadow of Atlanta. In the 1950’s Atlanta’s urban landscape began to creep toward Decatur and many of the city’s wealthier residents left the city. But recently, the population has grown and diversified with the development of local transportation that now allows commuters to reach downtown Atlanta easily. The city government also put in place several plans for mixed-use development creating a small, but trendy alternative to Atlanta’s big city personality.
