Dunwoody Georgia Business Lawyers
Dunwoody is located in the very northern part of DeKalb County and gained incorporation as a city in 2008. Because it is the third richest city in the state of Georgia, surrounding towns resisted the formation of the city fearing a loss of tax revenue for the area. But with or without incorporation, residents of Dunwoody have always considered themselves part of a unique community with a rich history. Before European settlers came to the area, Native American Indians inhabited the area to be close to the Chattahoochee River. The river provided a means of transportation and the area became a busy trading post. The Indians gave the area the name of Peach Tree, but by the early 1820’s more and more white settlers came to the area in search of gold and pushed out the Native Americans. The city of Dunwoody is named after Charles Dunwoody. The son of one of the founders of the Roswell Manufacturing Company, he was born and raised in Roswell. By 1853, the company was the largest cotton mill operation in northern Georgia and the owners wanted a more efficient way to transport the cotton products to Atlanta. A railway line was proposed and because there was a need for mill products to support the Civil War effort, the Georgia government agreed to the project. Ironically, the war interrupted construction of the rail line, and it was only completed in 1881. After the Civil War, Charles Dunwoody returned home to Roswell and after surveying the destruction, he moved to the Dunwoody area to reestablish himself. Once there, he was instrumental in helping the area prosper by rebuilding local bridges destroyed during the war and by planting crops to help support local families. The railroad was a tremendous source of economic fuel for the area in those early years, allowing for trade to continue in the area. Even when the railroad closed down in 1921, the area prospered. The Georgia Power Company brought power to Dunwoody in 1930 and the area’s first water facility was built in 1932. As more people moved into the area, schools were built and the population grew. In the 1950’s and 1960’s the area became popular with vacationers from surrounding cities, who were attracted by the rural setting. Then with the construction of Interstate 285, Dunwoody became more popular and the area’s first shopping center, Perimeter Mall, was built. Since that time mixed-use districts have been developed and growth in the area has continued.
