Roswell Georgia Business Lawyer
Situated north of Atlanta in Fulton County, Roswell is a prosperous city that has a long history linked to the cotton industry. The city is named after Roswell King who had managed the Pierce Butler plantations in Georgia. In 1830 he seized the opportunity to establish his own cotton plantation between Vickery Creek and the Chattahoochee River. His experience at Pierce Butler made him an experienced and cruel slave master and he built his own cotton business by exploiting the enslaved African-Americans, who had brought with them a rich culture of customs, religion and language. As his business prospered, Roswell founded the Roswell Manufacturing Company. With this new company Roswell brought in more workers for the mill and sold land to his well-to-do friends who then built elegant homes for themselves. This expansion spurred on more growth and a church and school were opened. In 1854 the Georgia State Assembly officially appointed Roswell as a charter city. During the Civil War, the Union Army destroyed the cotton mill, but left many of Roswell’s other buildings. Many families fled the area at this time until a new mill could be built and the cotton industry regained its important role in the local economy. In the early 1900’s, Roswell’s cotton industry took another blow when the fields were ravaged by boll weevil infestations. That devastation, combined with the effects of the Great Depression in the 1930’s, halted any growth in the region. It was not until the 20th century, when highway GA-400 was completed connecting Atlanta to cities in the north, that Roswell’s population and economy began to grow again. Today Roswell is a diverse suburban city with a population of approximately 90,000 residents and a reputation as one of the safest and best places to raise a family in the United States.
