Sandy Springs is located in Fulton County and was only incorporated as a city in 2005. Since 1980 the population has doubled in this affluent area, with an estimated 87,000 residents. Located due north of Atlanta, it is conveniently located just 15 miles from downtown and is metro Atlanta’s third largest city. The name Sandy Springs comes from the sandy springs that are located in the city that are now a protected historical site. Wilson Spruill first used the name in 1851, when he donated land to found the Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. In the early 1900’s the Hammond School was built to accommodate the influx of people moving to the area and further expansion of the population followed, with a housing boom after World War II. Once Interstate 285 and Georgia 400 were connected between Sandy Springs and Atlanta in the 1960’s and 1970’s, the area was able to accommodate daily commuters to the area’s many businesses. Today the city is home to many large corporations including United Parcel Service, Mirant Corporation, Newell Rubbermaid and Porsche Cars North America. Largely because of the tax revenue generated by Sandy Springs, incorporation of the area had been fiercely debated since the 1970’s. Finally in 2005, the city gained incorporation when a referendum was held. Residents voted 94% in favor of incorporation.
