The city of Marietta is the county seat of Cobb County and currently has an estimated 60,000 residents. The city was named for Mary Moore Cobb, the wife of Thomas Willis Cobb who served as Georgia Superior Court Judge, US Senator and US Representative. Like many towns of the same era, it was built around a square with a courthouse. The city got its start in 1833 when James Anderson, a surveyor, created the original map of the town. By the time the city was officially founded in 1834, 100 settlers were already living there. The Western and Atlantic Railroad connected Marietta to Atlanta fueling the town’s economic development. As the city became more established, the area’s mild climate began to attract wealthy vacationers looking to flee the heat and humidity of the South Carolina and Georgia coastal towns. With the boom in tourism and the accompanying population growth, a charter was enacted in 1852 that created a government with a city council and a mayor. Unfortunately the success of the 1840’s and 1850’s was undone during the Civil War. Seven days after the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain on June 27, 1864, General William T Sherman led Union troops into Marietta where they occupied the city. The Union forces left the city in November of that same year, but not before they set fire to most of the buildings in the town square, destroyed twenty homes in the southern part of Marietta and leveled a tannery and the Georgia Military Institute. Like many other cities in Georgia, Marietta was slow to recover after the Civil War. It was only in the early 20th century that industry in Marietta moved beyond cotton and farming. The Brumby Chair Company and Glover Machine Works were successful ventures, repurposing existing cotton mills for the paper, flour and marble industries. Not until World War II did prosperity return to Marietta. The Bell Aircraft Corporation came to Marietta to build B-29 bombers for the war effort. After closure of the plant when the war ended, the area’s economy remained stable. In 1951, Lockheed was asked by the US military to begin production of aircraft for the Korean War in the former Bell Aircraft facility. Eventually Lockheed would merge with Martin Marietta to form what we know of today as Lockheed Martin.
