Duluth Georgia Attorney Resources
Duluth is located 25 miles northeast of Atlanta on 10 square miles of land in Gwinnett County. Chartered in 1876, this affluent Atlanta suburb is a short commute to Atlanta and has an estimated population of 26,000 residents. The Cherokee and Creek Indians originally inhabited the region, but once Gwinnett County was established in 1818, white settlers began to move into the area. An Indian trail, later known as Old Peachtree Road, was made popular during the War of 1812 when it connected two key military forts. Duluth was originally called Howell’s Crossing, but was renamed in 1873 after Congress approved a north–south railway that connected the area to Duluth, Minnesota. The original name was coined when Evan Howell, a plantation owner and cotton merchant, built a road between his cotton gin at Chattahoochee River and Old Peachtree Road. The area became known as Howell’s Cross Roads and was later shortened to Howell’s Crossing. Construction of the railroad created much needed economic growth for the region. The economic boom attracted settlers to the area and a schoolhouse, a Methodist Church and a Baptist congregation were all built between 1871 and 1886. Conservation of the area’s forests began in the 1920’s when the city’s first female mayor, Alice H. Strickland, donated one acre of land to the effort. In the absence of a local hospital, Mayor Strickland also opened her home to children needing tonsil surgery. Her home is now designated as an historic location by the Georgia Historical Society. Duluth is a vibrant city that has continued to grow and change with the times, but has not lost its small–town flair and appeal. The city is one of Georgia’s most financially stable and is home to more than 1,600 companies.
