Lawrenceville is the county seat of Gwinnett County and the second oldest city in the state after Atlanta. The city was incorporated on December 15, 1821 and today has an estimated 29,000 residents who live within an area of 13.1 square miles. Lawrenceville was named after Commodore James Lawrence, commander of the Frigate Chesapeake in the War of 1812. Best known for his famous words of “Don’t give up the ship!” the name Lawrenceville was proposed by the city’s first postmaster, William Maltbie. When the site for the city center and county courthouse was purchased in 1821, the four streets bordering the town square were planned along with the other roads in the town. Local springs fed the well that was constructed in the center of the town square. As one of the earliest towns to have a courthouse, Lawrenceville was thrown into the limelight during a ten–year period following its incorporation. As one of the only courthouses on the frontier, the court was given expanded jurisdiction and was the site for several important legal battles concerning the land conflict with the Cherokee Indians. The court conducted the first round of hearings on Worcester vs. Georgia. In this case, Samuel Worcester challenged the state of Georgia’s right to distribute the Cherokee Indian land to the white settlers. After the case finished in the Supreme Court, sovereignty was given to the Cherokee Nation. But the victory for the Indian nation was short lived, as the white settlers refused to abide by the Supreme Court decision. Three years later the Indians were moved off their lands towards Oklahoma, in what became known as the “Trail of Tears.” Under the Georgia land lottery, the land was now available to settlers and an influx of people moved into the area. The town grew and was the closest place for settlers in the surrounding area to buy dry goods and sell livestock and produce. Today, a mixed–use retail and commercial development called Honest Alley pays tribute to the location in Lawrenceville where citizens came to buy and sell mules in the early 1800’s. Honest Alley is part of the revitalization of Lawrenceville’s downtown historic district that offers a variety of shopping, entertainment, sightseeing and dining experiences.
